Pronouncing Spanish

Now is time to dive into “quick and dirty” Spanish pronunciation. This strategy is geared toward native English speaking students who enroll in Spanish conversation courses.

Knowing that much of Spanish pronunciation uses sounds that are already produced in English should provide a confidence boost.

This approach allows English-speaking students to “hit the ground running.” More practice will develop the finer and more subtle points of Spanish pronunciation.

However, too much focus upon subtle Spanish pronunciation (i.e., accent elimination) is detrimental to learning to speak in Spanish because this moves language learning away from communication to “analysis of sound production” and the “mechanics of sound production.”

Advice: Learn enough to get started, then fine tune your Spanish pronunciation in increments. Allow your language skills to develop in a natual manner.
